Curly Q
A
hair
movement
empowering
African
women
to
embrace
their
natural
hair.
(Brief) overview
Curly Q is a hair movement that uses their platform to empower African women to embrace their hair.
The brand name “Curly Q” comes from the word “curlicue”, a term used to describe the unique curls in a person’s signature.
They want to encourage all African women to celebrate the unique signature that is their hair.
Our challenge was to create a logo that matched this bold movement.
Our solution
To
create
a
unique
signature
icon
for
a
brand
that
champions
women’s
hair
needed
a
bold
approach.
Inspired by powerful African women in history, we came up with an icon that draws from one powerful and iconic hairstyle.
The icon acts as a halo that shines light on all African women who boldly embrace their roots.
A
crown
that
unites
every
queen.
Our hair is our heritage.
It tells us where we are from.
In pre-colonial African societies, hair was seen as a symbol of a person's identity.
In those times, hair was celebrated and different styles were used to communicate tribes, family, social standing, special occasions and events.
And yet today, so many African women have a skewed and negative perception of their hair.
Hair identity, dialogue, images, products and celebrities have in most cases promoted a lopsided ideology of what beautiful hair is and how it should look.
As a whole, what we see in the media is disengaged with the reality of African women that don’t fit into that definition.
